A long time ago...

...on a table very close by (in my garage in fact), I finally played out the Star Wars scenario I set up a last weekend. I'll let the photos and captions tell the story of the battle, then I'll make a few comments on the tweaks I made to the Lord of the Rings rules.
Scout troopers move out to investigate the crash followed by a squad of Stormtroopers.
Meanwhile, Captain Fisk leads his crew into the area intent on raiding.
Grand Moff Tarkin makes his way down the gantry from his spaceship for the inspection.
The Scout troopers are caught in a crossfire! First blood to Rogg Trida and Larn.
The Grand Moff is greeted by Lieutenant Merlarrea.
'Never mind the greetings, Lieutenant, what is this that I hear of rebels operating in the area?'
'I guarantee that we are more than equipped to handle the situation Grand Moff.'
The stormtroopers advance only to be greeted by the sight of a Yuzzem behind the smoke coming from the speeder.
Rogg Trida and his co-pilot are down. Huk wades into the stormtroopers.
The lone scout trooper puts up a valiant fight, but the inevitable is not far away.
Huk and Fisk Torr rip into the stormtroopers
Larn, Zam and Hazul prepare to move towards the outer shelter.
Fisk takes a wound from a stormtrooper in hand to hand.
Huk finishes off the last of the squad in front of him.
Finished with the briefing, Tarkin leaves for his ship, escorted by Merlarrea.
Oh no, Zam is taken out as the group rushes for cover.
And once they get into cover, Hazul goes down too.
'It appears you have a problem here Lieutenant.'
Fisk, Huk and Larn continue to duel with the stormtroopers.
'It appears that you are in some difficulty Lieutenant. I will send reinforcements when I get back to the Executioner... and your replacement.'
'Thank you Grand Moff.'
'Zero stormtroopers left. Time to grab some barrels and get out of here!'
I rolled a dice for the heroes. On a 1 they didn't make it.

The survivors.
RIP
The rules worked better than I had expected for a first up run.  In order to encourage long range firefights, I came up with the following rules.

Blasters - strength 4 range 24". Figures that don't move fire twice. Figures that move fire once. Over 12" add one to shooting of model.
Repeating blaster - strength 4, range 36". Does not fire if figure moves. When stationary fires with 5 dice and may allocate any hits to any figure within 2"of the initial target figure at the shooter's discretion.

Otherwise, it was pretty much the Lord of the Rings rules, as standard. The stats that I used were as follows:

No-one had any Will, as I am saving that for using the force. No points values are given until I've worked out the balance (and even then I probably won't - I'm a scenario man, not a points man at heart). The droids moved 6"but beyond that I hadn't really come up with any special rules for them. Their role in the scenario was to be able to access computer portals and open doors or shut down weapons etc. But they never got to that point so I never had to design the rules on the go (that is how I work at times).
On reflection maybe all of the heroes needed a couple of wounds, or maybe they all needed fate (I failed every fate roll by the way). I may have to look at the might as well. There were 15 storm /scout troopers on the board with one imperial officer versus 8 rebels - so outnumbered two to one, but the scenario meant that the Imperials were never able to bring their number to bear, and never managed to get the repeating blaster into action. Despite that, the rebels took a beating, so the use of Fate and might to redress that balance could be good start. Suggestions from veteran LotR players would be appreciated.
I'll have a play around and hopefully soon Fisk Torr and his band of freedom fighters will fight again soon.

    1. It was. It played out quickly and had a real narrative feel to it.

    1. Now that is interesting. I've heard some good things about the 7TV rules, but haven't played them myself. Do they fit my goal of a quick and easy game?
