In July I did a mid-year update of where my wargaming plans were at and where they were going. It is really interesting what has happened in the short space of time since then. I've sold some stuff. Quite a bit of stuff actually, including all of the Great Northern War pocket project that I not only painted in record time but played out a whole campaign with. So what does that leave in my cabinets, awaiting their day under the paintbrush?
Will I fall asleep when I fight the Russians, too? |
French and Russians for the Napoleonic Wars
Union and Confederate troops for the American Civil War
Paraguayans and Brazilians for the War of the Triple Alliance
French and Prussians for 1870.
1/3000 WW1 Naval British and German
Look at these guys wasting time - I plan to get the battle finished in one hour. |
Lemberg - I find WWI Eastern Front battles fascinating |
In 28mm I have :
the Star Wars collections.
Lord of the Rings
Batman miniatures game.
This is rounded off with X-Wing.
Alongside this I'm also planning to play a bit of Command and Colours - I have the Ancients, Samurai and Napoleonic versions, and I'd like to add the Great War to that at some point too. The Samurai game is the only one I intend to paint miniatures for, the other two I'll keep as board games.
Punic Wars and Peninsular War - two of my all time favourite historical campaigns. |
The next post should hopefully be some painted figures although it feels like I still have ages to go with this commission. A solid couple of hours tomorrow and Saturday should do it though.

Why jettison your Pocket GNW project? You had it completed and in a game-ready state.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good question. I think for me the thing that enjoy about this hobby the most is the research, the buying of the armies, and then the painting and model making. I do enjoy games, but it comes last on the list. So I guess in a sense I've had my fun and it is time to move on. There are some things that I just won't part with - the Star Wars collection and the WWI figures, mostly for the sentimental value that those periods/genres hold for me. Pretty much every thing else is disposable. I guess that deep down I'm a hobbyist, not a gamer or a collector.
DeletePlanning, researching, and painting are my favorite facets of the hobby too. Collecting? I enjoy watching my painted masses grow. Gaming might be my least favorite part too but quite enjoy gaming and simulation as a study to gain insight with solitaire play.
DeleteYou are indeed a brave chap - I'm too scared of what the answers might be if I did a thorough job of taking stock...
ReplyDeleteI seem to do it quite frequently - it is interesting to see how many times I've completed a project and then moved on to something else, or I've changed my mind about doing something. The epitome of the wargames butterfly I guess.
DeleteMy problem is not so much not finishing the project, but rather a tendency to overstretch goals. The project starts out small but gains momentum and builds to a behemoth. The prime example was my Bavarian WSS army - I started out with the intent if creating four battalions and a couple of cavalry regiments...so nine battalaions and six regiments later...
ReplyDeleteThe results of your overstretch goals are pretty spectacular though Mark.
DeleteAh, if onlh her indoors shared that view!
DeleteNow then Natholeon
ReplyDeleteSounds like I'm not the only one with similar problems!
Good Luck with Army Building
